While he won’t be taking part in Super Bowl 56 as the Tampa Bay Buccaneers were trounced 31-14 by the Dallas Cowboys in the wild card round, Brady has still left an indelible mark on NFL’s blue riband event during his career. So, it’s time to reminisce on five of Brady’s greatest moments at the Super Bowl. Bear in mind that the majority of these were in a New England Patriots jersey. Patriots 20-17 Rams (Super Bowl 36 – February 2002)
Going into Super Bowl 36, Brady was coming off the back of a stellar campaign. Although the Patriots were the underdogs going into their showdown with the LA Rams, the Patriots were superb in every department. The Patriots defense kept the Rams at arm’s length, restricting them to just three points in over 30 minutes of football, forcing three turnovers, and building a 17-3 lead in the third quarter. Perhaps it was a leap of faith in Brady that Patriots coach Tom Belichick gave his fledgling star the chance to take control. And he was duly rewarded when Brady contributed a stunning 53-yard drive that resulted in an Adam Vinatieri field goal and sealed a famous win for the Patriots.
It was one of those goosebump moments for all those associated with Patriots, and it heralded the arrival of Brady and his ability to rise to the occasion.
Patriots 32-29 Panthers (Super Bowl 38 – February 2004)
While we may be more inclined to remember Super Bowl 38 for Janet Jackson’s wardrobe malfunction during the Halftime Show, Brady shone once again for the Patriots as they edged out the Carolina Panthers and the game was a classic. Although it looked like the contest would need overtime to settle matters, Brady seized the chance and set up Vinatieri for a game-winning field goal. Brady produced 354 passing yards and three touchdowns en route to clinching his second Super Bowl ring.
Patriots 28-24 Seahawks (Super Bowl 49 – February 2015)
By now, Brady was accustomed to making the seemingly annual jaunt to the Super Bowl, and he produced another spellbinding display, this time against the Seattle Seahawks in Super Bowl 49. For the first time at a Super Bowl, Brady threw for four touchdown passes, and the feat was made more impressive by the fact that they took out the Seahawks who had steamrollered past Peyton Manning and the Denver Broncos 12 months earlier at Super Bowl 48.
Patriots 34-28 Falcons (Super Bowl 51 – February 2017)
When facing adversity, the big players stand up and make themselves counted. This was certainly the case for Brady at Super Bowl 51. After surging into a 28-3 lead midway through the third quarter, it seemed that it would be a routine win for the Atlanta Falcons. But Brady had other ideas and he failed to read the script. He led the Patriots on a 75-yard drive and threw a touchdown pass to James White as the Patriots clinched a 34-28 victory, and it was one of the greatest comebacks in Super Bowl history let alone performances in Brady’s catalog of superb Super Bowl displays.
Buccaneers 24-9 Chiefs (Super Bowl 55 – February 2021)
The only other team that Brady has won the Super Bowl with during his career is the Bucs. And Super Bowl 55 was dubbed as Brady vs Patrick Mahomes as the game pitted together two of the pre-eminent NFL quarterbacks. However, this game saw Brady come out on top as the Bucs stormed to a resounding 24-9 victory. Brady blew the Chiefs away with three scintillating first half touchdown drives which saw the Bucs 21-6 up at the interval, and the Chiefs never really recovered. Brady achieved his highest ever passer rating in a Super Bowl, and it was a sublime display on his part.
