Tottenham’s English Premier League story can be divided into two distinct periods – the early years where they were perennial underachievers and almost got relegated, whereas in the past few years, they have managed to muscle their way into the top four picture. The north London outfit — who have never won the EPL — have often been cruelly referred to as ‘chokers’ by their rivals and under Antonio Conte, they will be hoping to provide a more concerted title challenge this season.

Tottenham’s Stadium – An Overview

Tottenham has a colorful history and the origins of the club date back to 1899 when White Hart Lane was formed. Previously, the site was a disused nursery that was owned by the brewers Charrington. Over the years, White Hart Lane became an iconic English football ground and by 1961, the last year Tottenham won the league title, the stadium had floodlights installed. In the 1990s, there were several modifications carried out to increase the capacity, but it was one of the smallest capacities (36,000) for one of the traditional top-six clubs.

However, Tottenham capped off their final game at White Hart Lane in May 2017 with a stirring 2-1 victory over Manchester United before they moved into their new stadium — the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium — in April 2019. The ground’s current capacity is just shy of 63,000, which is a boon for competing in the Champions League.

How did Tottenham fare last season?

Tottenham had a topsy turvy season, which was in part down to Nuno Santo. The Portuguese tactician was sacked for his side’s downturn in form, however, the appointment of Conte proved to be a masterstroke. Although there were a few hiccups along the way, Tottenham scrambled to pip north London rivals to fourth spot, and with it, a return to the Champions League following a three-year absence. The additions of Dejan Kulusevski, Rodrigo Bentancur, and Cristian Romero proved to be inspired, but Tottenham fans are still craving a trophy.

What can we expect from Tottenham this season?

Having returned to Europe’s elite, Tottenham will have new challenges to face, however, they did previously reach the Champions League Final in 2019. Tottenham has a highly-vaunted attack, and if they can settle into the groove quickly, they could give Manchester City and Liverpool a good run for their money. 

However, whether they will have the stamina remains another thing. But there’s no reason to suggest that they can’t have a fine campaign and perhaps finish third. Also, a League Cup or FA Cup wouldn’t go amiss either and these are exciting times for Tottenham.
