Undoubtedly the most celebrated and successful club in the English Premier League, Manchester United split opinions, as they are adored and hated in almost equal measure.

However, after being overtaken by Manchester City in recent years, United are keen to shift the balance of power. Since Sir Alex Ferguson’s retirement in 2013, United’s troubles have been well documented, but with a new manager in the dugout, perhaps they might see an upturn in their fortunes.

United were originally known as Newton Heath when they were founded in 1878. However, by 1902, Newton Heath changed to Manchester United, and they have a world famous stadium that is the envy of many of their rivals.

More commonly known as “The Theatre of Dreams”, Old Trafford officially opened in 1910 with a capacity of approximately 80,000. During World War II, Old Trafford was used as a depot by the military after it was heavily damaged following a sustained German bombing raid.

During the post-war period, Old Trafford underwent several renovations, and it has seen an increase in capacity over the years. Now, attendance figures are typically 70,000+. And Old Trafford has hosted some incredible league and Champions League games over the years.

How did Manchester United fare last season?

Last season was a rather turbulent campaign. After sacking Ole Gunnar Solskjaer in the wake of a 4-1 drubbing at the hands of Watford, United chiefs installed Ralf Rangnick as the interim manager.

However, the change didn’t have the desired effect as United limped to sixth spot and claimed a Europa League spot at the expense of West Ham. For a club of United’s stature, last season was a major disappointment.

What can we expect from Manchester United this season?

This is a bold era for Manchester United as they have a new manager in charge, so it will be hoped he can restore some pride and glory to a side that has been a fading force.

There have been some promising signs in pre-season that United appear to be in good shape. Despite some concerns about Maguire as well as lingering worries about Ronaldo’s future, the minimum remit should be a top-four spot.

With a couple of new additions, United could muscle their way into the top four and we should expect the likes of Sancho to take off. He is a huge talent that could tear things up.
